Easy Steps to Your Best Broth Ever
Making bone broth is more about patience than complicated techniques. Here’s how you can make a delicious batch with our amazing Beef Soup Bones:
- Optional (but recommended) Roasting: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the Beef Soup Bones on a baking sheet and roast for 20-30 minutes, or until nicely browned. This adds incredible depth of flavor to your broth!
- Combine Ingredients: Transfer the roasted (or unroasted) Beef Soup Bones to a large stock pot or slow cooker. Add the chopped onion, carrots, celery, smashed garlic, bay leaves, black peppercorns, and apple cider vinegar.
- Cover with Water: Pour enough cold filtered water over all the ingredients to cover them by at least an inch or two. Using cold water helps to slowly extract more flavor and nutrients.
- Bring to a Simmer: Bring the pot slowly to a gentle boil over medium-high heat, then immediately reduce the heat to low. Skim off any foam that rises to the surface during the first hour.
- Simmer Patiently: Cover the pot and let your broth simmer gently for a minimum of 8-12 hours, and up to 24 hours (or even 48 hours for an ultra-rich broth!). If using a slow cooker, set it to low for the same duration. Add the fresh parsley during the last hour of cooking if desired.
- Strain and Season: Once your broth has simmered to perfection, carefully remove the bones and large vegetable pieces with tongs or a slotted spoon. Strain the remaining liquid through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into clean jars or containers. Season generously with salt to taste.
- Cool and Store: Allow the broth to cool completely before covering and storing it in the refrigerator for up to 5-7 days, or freeze it in individual portions for longer storage (up to 6 months).
Tips & Variations for Your Homemade Broth
- Spice it Up: Feel free to add other herbs and spices like thyme, rosemary, or a pinch of red pepper flakes for an extra kick.
- Veggie Boost: Don’t toss those veggie scraps! Keep a bag in your freezer for onion ends, carrot peels, and celery leaves to bulk up your broth. This is a wonderfully sustainable practice!
- Instant Pot Method: For a faster broth, use an Instant Pot! After step 2, set it to high pressure for 2-3 hours, then allow for a natural pressure release. This is perfect for those busy weekdays when you still want farm-fresh goodness.
